was given this book when my first son was about a month old, person who gave it to me raved about how fantastic it was, read it expecting very big things and thought some of the information was very good and some not so good.
As every child is not exactly the same, this will work well for some and not so well for others, but anything is worth trying once.

I bought this book, hoping to help me with my daughters sleeping, and routine. Instead it made me feel like the worst mother ever. I was trying to do things with her, that made no sense, kept trying to make her sleep all the time, when she shouldn't have been. Such a terrible book, don't buy it, it will confuse you, and make you feel rubbish!!!!!

my 3 month old granddaughter was captivated by this book from the second she saw it. I was doubtful when I first saw the book 'in the flesh' that it would hold her attention for long. It is extremely short and very simplistic, but she was (and still is) mesmerized by it. She stares intently at the patterns and smiles back at the faces. The crunchy sounds she is rewarded with when trying to grab at the pictures or chew the pages are an added bonus. This looks like being a favourite for quite some time

Our girl is 4 weeks old. Early in the parenting process, we found there are two types of person; those who are 'do what the baby wants' people, and those who mostly want the baby to adjust to their life, rather than the other way round. If you are the first type - find another book. If you are the second - this has been an excellent guide for us. Within 4 weeks, our baby is almost always going 3.5 - 4 hours between feeds without complaining, and sleeps 5-6 hours at a stretch at night (much to the amazement of many of our ... Read More:

I was given this book by a friend and can honestly say I so pleased that they gave it to me. You can skip sections and come back to areas that you are unsure of. It has questions by people in the same situation and answers them clearly.

I was concerned about a few of the myths surrounding the birth- for example my waters breaking whilst still at work or in the middle of the supermarket....but the book actually puts things in perspective.

Having a pregnancy that resulted in seeing a consultant for ... Read More:

This book was the BEST purchase we made. Even though we read the whole book, we didn't follow it like a manual, we picked the parts we needed and/or agreed with and used those. Our baby was (and still is) peacefully sleeping through the night from 3 1/2 months on and following a routine - NOT a timetable. As parents we are calm, coping and know exactly what our baby wants and needs thanks to the advice in this book. All in all we are are very contented household! We were TOTALLY against controlled crying and this book (along with our instincts)helped ... Read More:

My 5 month old daughter was really poorly one night and I rang an old friend (mother of two) for advice, she used this book as a reference and said it had always proved useful with her children. The easy to follow guide and clear information can be reassuring at 3am in the morning with a young child! I bought it on her recommendation and have found it a great help.

This is a book to turn to for help on every aspect of parenting small children. It's well laid out, easy to find specific information, and concise without being dry. It covers everything from developmental stages, to healthy eating (including recipe ideas), childhood diseases, immunisation and first aid, helping your child develop ethics and good values. It's a hefty tome, reflecting a vast amount of knowledge gathered by the two authors over many years, and it was my crutch!

You may want to buy additional guides to parenting if you are struggling ... Read More:

I bought this just a few weeks before my first baby was born at the end of last year, I found the first couple of chapters on general baby care and newborn very useful but then as the months went by, Gina seems to imply your baby 'should' be doing this and that and I sometimes felt that my baby didnt measure up to her exacting standards and her patronising tones made me feel inadequate as a first time mother. Her strict routines are well known and of course they are in here, not as detailed as in some of the other books but detailed enough for those of us who seem to muddle ... Read More:

Elizabeth Pantley's book is especially great for those parents co-sleeping and breastfeeding. It fills in the gaps where the Sears Attachment Parenting and Baby Sleep books fail on this angle. It mentions the co-dependancy of daytime naps and night-time sleeping.

BUT having specifically mentioned two mothers with lap-napping babies that were cured of this sleeping preference, guidance on how to achieve success was not supplied. Another mother was cured of taking bedtime with her baby due to separation issues but again this was frustratingly not addressed.
