VHS : High Spirits [1988]
Peter O'Toole is hysterical in this film, and quite easily, is the glue that holds it together (contrary to popular opinion). While this film suffers its share of problems, (such as a few holes in the plot, a little shoddy acting here and there) it makes me laugh as few other movies have. O'Toole's drunken wisdom and fights with his drunken, ghost-talking mother are great. Steve Guttenberg does fine, Daryl Hannah is okay. The Irish country side is lovelyand haunting (incidentally, the movie was filmed ... Read More:

VHS : Angel - Season 1 (Box Set 2) [2000]
This box set is gr8! You get to see David Borenaz/Angel in a new and darker light, away from the cloud Buffy, where she takes all the lead roles. You also get to see Cordelia and Wesley( and Doyle) in a way that explains more about the character behind them, for example, you see why Cordi is usually so mean.
I would recomend this to anybody who has any interest in Buffy or Angel at all.
The best episodes are the ones with Faith, as you see her behind the make up and tight clothes.

VHS : The Good Life - Series 4 - Episodes 5 To 7 - Plus The Royal Special
This video includes Suit Yourself, Sweet and Sour Charity, Anniversary, and the Royal Command Performance (also called When I'm 64).

The first three episodes listed are from the final series and are some of the best shows. Suit Yourself has Tom and Barbara turning fleeces into clothing (or something like clothing) and Jerry competing furiously for Sir's job. Sweet and Sour Charity features Margo deciding whether to take the lead role in the Music Society's production of Sweet Charity, a play she ... Read More:

VHS : The Barchester Chronicles [1982]
Donald Pleasance is uncanny - in a new, good way - in this fair adaptation of the beloved Barchester Chronicles' first two stories. It became imprinted on my mind decades ago when I first saw it - on WGBH/PBS Masterpiece Theatre in the USA - and I have not forgotten it. The emotionally satisfying & very subtle resolution to a love affair is presented carefully enough for the Victorian reticence & sentimentality to shine through. Anthony Trollope was very good at exploring the question, "What is a gentleman?" ... Read More:

VHS : The Philadelphia Story [1941]
Tracy Lords is getting married again. This time to a man who worked his way to the top instead of starting there. Dexter her first husband invites himself to the wedding and the wedding preparations. Also inviting their selves with a little blackmail to the wedding is a writer, and photographer, from a magazine of dubious reputation. Throw in a philandering father and a friendly uncle. We watch as they go through the motions and emotions of courting and re-evaluating their lives.
This is basically a comedy and ... Read More:

VHS : The Boyfriend [1971]
Where is the DVD release of this classic piece of Ken Russell camp ? It showed what a good actress Twiggy could be (where is the DVD of Madame Sousatzka ????) and is enormously indulgent and good fun. Please remaster the original director's cut and release it on DVD. Given the ridiculously high prices being asked for old ex-rental VHS tapes of this film, a DVD release sounds like it would be a profitable exercise.

VHS : The Devils [1971]
This film deserves so much more credit for what it achieves from Huxley's original. While some of the performances are a little shakey, this film represents one of the great Oliver Reed's finest moments - he exudes power and sexuality as Grandier, and the film achieves some particularly powerful/disturbing moments in the depiction of the ergot-addled nunnery.

HOWEVER...

This film has truly been victimised by the censors and there is Still no DVD version available - surely with the garbage which the ... Read More:

VHS : Schindler's List [1994]
In telling Schindler's story the director chose black and white and the beginning intimates that it might be in the great tradition of 'The Third Man' etc. Unfortunately the film meanders astray into detailed descriptions of the holocaust and the dynamic of the film is lost. Instead of a tense 1 hour 50 minutes of cunning, guile and threat there are literal hours when almost everything is 'spelt out' in many long takes and diversions. The great film techniques of suggestion and inference are little used as almost every action is shown literally ... Read More:
