VHS : Trainspotting [1996]
as someone from Edinburgh who lived and went to plenty of the places mentioned in Trainspotting i have to say read the book the book instead which has the full content and message rather than just a comic short hand for what was happening at the time. It made fashionista fools think that taking hard drugs was a nice activity and gave them kudos and brought in too many people too Edinburgh looking for that lifestyle.
I have never managed it all the way through and think it is just an alternative ... Read More:

VHS : Nuts In May [1976]
I had never heard of this film, but I first watched it a couple of years ago and it blew me away. This is now firmly establised as one of my favourite films of all time. Whilst I know that many people will not understand the film, I now actually judge people on whether they like this film or not. I have changed my views on my own friends through watching this superb film. People who do not like this film are simpleton's in my view, and example of this is my friend Wikey. He does not like this film, and therefore ... Read More:

VHS : Prospero's Books [1991]
I must admit I don't like Greenaway as a rule, and I find Prospero one of Shakespeare's least appealing characters. But this film is quite extraordinary in all sorts of respects. Nyman's music is fantastic, and used here to good effect (Nyman didn't think so, and broke up with Greenaway as a result, but that's his problem). Ditto Sarah Leonard's singing. An ancient Gielgud is splendid as Prospero. Michael Clark's performance as Caliban has to be seen to be believed. The visuals are unlike anything else you have ever ... Read More:

VHS : The Boyfriend [1971]
Where is the DVD release of this classic piece of Ken Russell camp ? It showed what a good actress Twiggy could be (where is the DVD of Madame Sousatzka ????) and is enormously indulgent and good fun. Please remaster the original director's cut and release it on DVD. Given the ridiculously high prices being asked for old ex-rental VHS tapes of this film, a DVD release sounds like it would be a profitable exercise.

VHS : The Devils [1971]
This film deserves so much more credit for what it achieves from Huxley's original. While some of the performances are a little shakey, this film represents one of the great Oliver Reed's finest moments - he exudes power and sexuality as Grandier, and the film achieves some particularly powerful/disturbing moments in the depiction of the ergot-addled nunnery.

HOWEVER...

This film has truly been victimised by the censors and there is Still no DVD version available - surely with the garbage which the censors ... Read More:

VHS : The Draughtsman's Contract [1982]
We're in post Restoration England in 1694, and at a country estate filled with condescending, witty, superficial creatures dressed in heavy satins and lace, with chalk dusted cheeks, painted cupid lips and beauty spots, and wearing magnificent high wigs with cascading curls down to the waist...and that's just the men.

In their midst is Mr. Neville (Anthony Higgins), a talented, successful and arrogant artist whose father, we learn later, was a tenant farmer. He is engaged by the lady of the estate, Mrs. Herbert (Janet Suzman) ... Read More:

VHS : The Story Of Qiu Ju [1992]
This film opens up modern-day China to a Western audience with the charm and subtlety rarely found in Hollywood filmmaking. At times, the mixture of real-world footage and acting make for what feels like a fly-on-the-wall documentary. It's hard to believe that this isn't really happening. But, of course, it is, in a way. If you think that don't understand China and the Chinese, watch this film. This is a film about people, and whilst very Chinese in its focus on the retention of 'face' and dignity, one is struck by just how much we all share on this ... Read More:

VHS : Farewell My Concubine [1993]
This has to be one of the greatest films ever made. I can add nothing to the previous reviews other than this little anecodte...
The first time I went to see this film was after a hectic week of theatre work. I had been in the constant company of one of my fellow actors for over a week, including rehearsals, performances and the party on the last night of the show. The cast had then all slept in the same house, breakfasted and gone their ways. My friend suggested we go to see some arty Chinese film (yawn!). I was vaguely interested because I had seen ... Sacher Masoch's book about a "suprasensual" poet (Severin) who craves to be dominated and beaten by a beautiful woman (Wanda) is a classic erotic novel, although to describe it as such is to do it a disservice. Masoch's book, mostly auto-biographical, is a philosophical discourse on the nature of power, a morality tale and really the first serious attempt to describe the masochistic experience (masochist being a word we wouldn't have if it wasn't for the influence the book had).

Written in the 1870's the books interest lies not only in Severin's desires, ... Read More:
