Shape-shifting demons, abducted chidren, a disappearing uncle who is in fact Lyra's father, an evil society woman,'Egyptians', polar bears, beautiful witches and Cossacks bursting into flames when slain...It can't be entirely the film-makers' fault, surely? Pullman's oeuvre seems to have a great following, but that means nothing nowadays when crowds go mad about the most idiotic books. Had some time to kill and went to see this film. Given the overhype of the Narnia films and several other book adaptations I was surprised and delighted to find out it was great entertainment and well worth the ticket price. This (probably) beautiful film by one of my favourite directors was ruined by a musical score (yet again!) drowning out the dialogue. When will they learn less is more???

This film is fantastic. I rented it and watched it 5 times before I took it back and then ordered one from Amazon. I'm not in the habit of watching films repeatedly, and neither are my family, but even as my sister watched it for the first time she said "can we watch it again when it's finished"! Perfect casting for the kid, he's amazing... adorable. The story is entirely music based, and even being completely tone deaf, I loved the whole thing. Buy it, rent it, whatever, just give it at least one watch :-)

This is a family movie, it is basicly a fairytale. If that put you off avoid the movie you probably won't enjoy it. The performances are all solid particularly that of Freddie Highmore, at least I think it was him I didn't check before writing this review. The effects are all solid if sometimes unspectacular. The set up is simple, family move to a new home and find out there is some dark mystery yadda yadda yadda. I grew up watching the original film so I expected not to like this version as much but I actually prefer it. It's a lot darker than the original film and I found it very amusing. I wasn't so impressed with all the added parts about Willy Wonka's father but apart from that it was all good. I think it's one of those films that's just as good for adults as it is for children. And of course it has Johnny Depp in it, which is a great bonus!

This is an awful, awful film. The plot is pathetic and makes no sense. In fact it annoyed me whilst watching it because it was so bad. Even my 7 year old got bored and started asking questions about why he was doing this and that. (Arthur that is). The only good thing about this film is The child actor who plays Arthur who is brilliant and stars in the Spiderwick Chronicles, which is a fantastic film and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breathe as this drivel. I found this film very moving and emotional. the beauty of these magnificent tigers is true greatness of the big cat family. the film opens with the two young tiger cubs and leads on to what happens to them when they become separated from there parents. the male is shot dead and the mother fakes her death and gets away. it shows just how cruel and heart-less mankind is to these animals. it is a great and very beautiful film. the real stars of course are the tigers and at the end the brothers are re-united with there mother a very moving and beautiful ...
