The Spiderwick Chronicles is one of those films that ticks all the right boxes for a traditional family adventure movie. It tells the story of a family who relocate to a spooky mansion in the middle of nowhere (as you do), then start experiencing very strange goings on both within the house and outside it. Things start to go weird when one of the sons finds an old book written by their great Uncle, who mysteriously disappeared many years ago, and is the former owner of the mansion. The book documents ... Read More:

How can I communicate the aberration that this represents?
I hope that a number of you will be repelled simply to hear that the roles of Hermia and Helena are taken (and then forgotten about) by those mascots of "Pretty but Pointless", Calista Flockhart and Anna Friel. Calista Flockhart rides a Penny Farthing bicycle and blows the tumbling tendrils of hair off her forehead regularly - but it gets worse, even when the talent gets more accomplished.
Stanley Tucci would get laughed off a senior school stage ... Read More:

George Clooney freely admits that "Ocean's Twelve" was made in order to ensure that both this and "Syriana" saw the light of day. Perhaps this is a case of making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. It is heartening to see something of use coming out of that.

"Good Night & Good Luck" seems, on the surface, to be a film about the witch hunts of Joseph McArthy against perceived threat of communism in America. The film traces journalist Ed Murrow's televisual campaign to discredit the committee set up to investigate ... Read More:

Curtis Hanson has managed to direct a film which captures the late 1940's in both style and spirit. Often films depicting the glamourous side of this era immerse themselves too much in the styles and fashions of the time, rendering the actual characters superfluous to the movie. Not here though - the characters drive the film, blending in perfectly with the directing style swaying effortlessly to capture the gritty and the classic-Hollywoodesque, the guy has done his homework.

Risks were taken by casting relatively unknown ... Read More:

Seen this at the cinema and a couple of times on TV.Bought this to try out my new KEF Kit 100 system and was not disappointed.Still makes you think how young these "men" were and a visit to the American War Cemetery at Madingley nr Cambridge only confirms this.

This is a pretty straight-forward film that will never win any awards. But a movie doesn't have to win awards to be good. And this is a great example. The story is sweet and touching, and as another reviewer said, induces random moments of blubbing. The characters (for a pleasant change) are all decent, nice people, which helps you love the film even more. I wasn't really expecting much before I watched it, but We Are Marshall is just quality.

I'd just finished reading Karin Slaughter's book of almost the same name when this dvd popped through my letterbox so I initially thought - obviously mistakenly - that some film producer was ahead of the game!

As a thriller the film works well but only because of Anthony Hopkins as the lead criminal (if proven guilty, of course) and the attempt by a young legal hotshot, Ryan Gosling, to do just that.

Frankly, this would have been a run-of-the-mill made-for-tv film but for these two. Anthony Hopkins is magnificent as an aircraft ... Read More:

Film starts with a disintergrating family unit. Workaholic architect dad ignores and is irritated by his family, so that all laughing stops when he gets home from work. He never joins in the fun and cancels holidays. Wife Gail(Meryl Streep) believes their marriage to be over as he disappoints their young son yet again, cancelling a family trip. However mother and son set off on their own to navigate a river by dinghy that Gail knew as a young girl (she had even worked as a river guide). As they are about to set off the son makes friends with another group ... Read More:

Let's start by saying I am somewhat biased - looking through the few reviews I've done will reveal that Wong Kai-Wai has both my no.1 (In The Mood For Love) and no.2 (2046) films - Whilst his first foray into the English Language is not terrible, it certainly is not groundbreaking stuff. Overall I can't help but think of what might of been.

Still, this is a good and pretty simple movie. Performance are great - Norah Jones on her acting debut. Rachel Weisz and most notably David Strathairn probably steal the show. Jude Law's Manchester accent, may not ... Read More:

There are very few films that remain incessantly entertaining after repeated viewings but this is certainly one of them. I would describe it as a comfort movie - one to watch with the girlfriend on stormy afternoons or reassuringly peaceful evenings.
Sneakers is a feelgood comedy-thriller with a plausible and pacy plot and fine performances from a cast that works wonderfully well together.
Reminiscent of 1950's British espionage or courtroom thrillers, it relies, not upon contrived set-piece action sequences but upon strong plot and fine comedic performances ... Read More:
