| It's one of those albums that takes it's time to really soak in like OK Computer, then it's stuck in the CD player for months. So intricate that it's got something new each time you listen.
The Debut album is a cracker in places, but Sky 2 shows their confidence to play to their strengths as a band. Toccata gets old on repeated plays but 'Watching the Aeroplanes' is an awesome piece in 4 parts. For the money? Can't lose, just buy it. |

| This is the opera that shot Georgiu to stardom. It's easy to see why, with her combination of acting, looks and singing. Violetta is a very difficult role, it places very different demands on the singer in each act. Georgiu isn't quite ideal for act 1, but after that she's really in her element. You can practically see the paternal pride in Solti's face as he watches his young protegee bloom. Surely the definitive Traviata. |

| Sony's earlier release of this set, dating from as lately as 1992, is still available, but I'm sure they have some terribly good reason for reissuing it now. There is a reference to remastering of the sound, but I can't find out whether this is against the 1992 issue or the original one from 1955. The new disc sounds much like the old one to me, the sound of that was excellent (particularly for engineering now half a century old), and as for the performance...

| THIS IS A TERRIFIC REMINDER OF WHAT A TREMENDOUS STAGE PERFORMER STEPHANIE LAWRENCE WAS. SHE HAS FEW RIVALS FOR THE ROLE OF MRS JOHNSTONE, MANY HAVE PLAYED IT SUCCESSFULLY BUT THE DESPERATION OF HER PLIGHT AT THE END OF THE SHOW HAS NEVER BEEN MATCHED. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT CAST RECORDING ALL ROUND AND DEFINITELY THE ONE TO BUY FOR AN AUTHENTIC REPRESENTATION OF ONE OF THE FINEST BRITISH MUSICALS EVER WRITTEN.

| A postcard tries to capture the essence of a place to send to someone who has not been there, both through picture and message. Max Richter's musical equivalents are equally distilled, and like postcards, they are short (the whole album lasts just over half an hour), and they can be restless and imaginative or quirky and poignant. 1. all 6 Brandenburg concertos beautifully played by English Chamber Orchestra. Normally albums of Bach's Brandenburg concertos only have three of the concertos. | The tracks on this cd are excellent and well worth the money. I get worried about the packaging of this sort of disc though because it reminds me of Tesco's attempt to sell wine to the masses by renaming a mediocre chablis as 'Good with meat' or whatever. If this was called 'Fine Opera' or 'An Opera Sampler' then I'd be a lot happier but the dumb approach of 'The Only Opera Album You'll Ever Need' makes me cringe. Once again though: the music is very good and the performances are excellent on the whole. |
