I am just recovering from my latest 'depressive episode' and wish I had found this book earlier. Instantly puts into images the feelings I have being suffering from and not able to describe myself. This book is so small and light-weight I can carry it anywhere, I find it an enormous help to read whenever the dark thoughts come. This is exactly what you need when your concentration is low, 10 minutes cover to cover and instantly feel lifted.

I doubt any review could do this book justice. It is a rare thing: a book that is both powerful & deep . . . AND light and joyous; it is both well written, so that reading it is a pleasure, and thought-provoking and even challenging, such that we might need to allow many weeks if not months to allow it's messages to sink in.

Matthieu admits that he is a happy man and this shines through in every chapter. So too does both his knowledge and life experiences of both scientific and Buddhist thinking ... Read More:

I read this book hoping it would be just as the title described it "a cheerful book about depression".
Personally, I didnt find it that cheerful and it read like one long poetic metaphor.
As an autobiography into a depressed poets life, I found it very interesting and some of the symptoms described I could defintily relate to.
But if you are looking for a self-help book this is not it, there are far too many long and complex quotes for a depressed mind to read.
An o.k read just a bit too much of ... Read More:

If you are interested about justice, sociology and society you should some day read this excellent story of how control over people has changed within last five hundred years. Perhaps mr Foucault was inspired by Orwell's 1984 and turned it to be scientifically consistent theory or control. Great thing is that you don't need to be scientist to understand about this book which means that it must have been hard work to make the text sound as easily to comprehend.

If you are in midlife and not wholly happy with your life, read this book. This book is meant to empower.

Marianne Williamson asks us: "How would we live were we not afraid of death? How would we live if we felt full permission from ourselves and others to give to life everything we've got?"

With those thoughts in mind, Williamson guides the reader to go after the life they want; to be proactive. Only when "we go for it" do we flourish.
Midlife is what you create. We are not too old to change, if anything, with ... Read More:

Steven Pinker is the author of the modular mind theory which is refuted by his colleagues. Further analogies with computer architecture are similarly presented here with his inference of parallel processing. Other authors stress that the brain's neural networks are more akin to internetworking which does have implications for parallel processing but so what? We know all of this already. Unconvincing on the relationship between mind and brain. For instance, how is will (thought direction) and conscience explained? Thus far, no one has succesfully ... Read More:

Cosmic ordering is all the rage now, and for anyone interested in finding out about it, this book is a good introduction. A bit lightweight in places but a good place to start your spiritual awakening.
Also the free cd has a great meditation aid on it.

Personally the for a real life changing read i would recommend 'Ask & it is given' by Esther & Jerry Hicks.

"Consciousness Explained" is the best place to start if you want to begin the venture into this perplexing area. Dennett's books is well organized, well thought out, and does a wonderful job of explaining difficult concepts in a way that is interesting and relatively easy to understand.

Another reviewer titles his review "Consciousness Denied." That is a fair comment. Many people think that Dennett explains away consciousness, rather than explaining it. In fact, I agree with that critism myself -- I think. I tend to agree with John Searle (again ... Read More:
