A find from my Australian trip.
It's surprising how few books there are infact about growing up without a mother. My mother didn't die though. But it was still very interesting and emotional to read this book and to feel that there are many women like me.
This book is series of interviews and how women have coped with the loss thru different phases in their lives. It's also a story how the author lost her mother and how she dealt with it.
Eventhough this book deals with different ... Read More:

I'm sorry to say I found this book a real disappointment. I forced myself to read it, expecting it to be full of great confidence-boosting advice but to be honest, it bored me. Admittedly Brian Roet has written in plain laymans terms, which means you don't have to have a psychology degree to understand what he's talking about, but I didn't find any inspiring statements or have moments of revelations as I have done with other self-help books. I did like a few of the quotes though.
The only 'exercises' ... Read More:

I am a Clinical Teacher for Junior Doctors and Medical Students. This book transformed my teaching. Learning goes on in the heads of the learner. The teacher just has to ask the right questions, create legitimate time for thinking, and allow the students to learn to think. Doctors need to be the highest level thinkers in the team - this book helps to be a far better, more relaxed teacher.

This is a great introduction to MBTI, but despite saying, please don't use the MBTI to pigeon-hole people, that's what the book does. Carl Jung (on whose work the MBTI is based) isn't even mentioned.

This is an excellent for people wanting to use type-watching at work, but for a more nuanced view you'll have to go elsewhere.

This book is so awful I felt compelled to write a review. There is nothing of worth in here unless you are completely lacking in imagination and insight into even the slightest variance of human nature.

I would recommend researching the 16 personality types as defined by the Myers-Briggs test - Google this and you will find a lot of useful info on personality types, which will help you write convincing characters with believable motives far better than this book ever could.

The info contained can't be out of date because it addresses the same issue as say The Linden Method does in virtually the same way BUT for a comparitively miniscule cost. Why spend hundreds just to be told the same advice as contained here?
Handly himself suffered badly and nearly came to suicide over it. Luckily he turned his whole life around in a fairly simple way.
The use of visualisations/affirmations spoken of by Robert Handly have been touched on by everyone from Buddha to Claire Weekes. Handly ... Read More:

Part of me is fairly humble and part of me is not. I did study archaeology and anthropology at Cambridge in the 1970s. I cannot accept with any degree of equanimity the vast posturings and overblown empty, self conscious rhetoric and jargon that inhabits the last half of this book.

It starts quite promisingly with a good discussion of Homo Sapiens/ Neanderthals and perhaps some credence can be given to a psychological estimation that sapiens was better adapted than his contemporaries through a higher intelligence ... Read More:

I have just began doing EMDR therapy. When I started reading this book, it boosted my confidence with regards to my treatment. However, I found it a bit too positive, almost evangellicaly written.
So far, my EMDR treatment has been effective, but I have doubts over it being effective quite as quickly as it was implied in this book.

This book succincntly presents the Theory of Mind (ToM) explanation of autism, i.e. autistic people do not have a theory of mind hence they can't attribute emotions, intentions and beliefs to others. Having a 'theory of mind' largely reduces to a capacity to take another peron's perspective. While the authors are clinical psychologists, this ToM account of the underlying deficit that is autism, raises many provocative philosophical implications about self consciousness and consciousness of others, and pragmatics. Another text by Baron-Cohen and Howlin ... Read More:
