Once in a while it's a joy to come across an inspiring book which deserves to be consulted time and time again. Lesley Skipper's brilliantly researched and observed "Inside Your Horse's Mind" had that effect on me, as did Lucy Rees' "The Horse's Mind". For me, this beautifully written book, by the eminent animal biologist Marc Bekoff, will be sharing pride of place on my bookshelf.

This is a study which anyone who has an interest in animal behaviour will delight in. Behaviours such ... Read More:

I wonder how many of the psychologists and "enneagram teachers" and other quacks writing glowing reviews on these pages can present a shred of scientific evidence for their claims? Fact: the enneagram typology has zilch academic credibility; there is not a single substantive analysis that does or indeed ever will support these people's claims. Let them prove me wrong by quoting references in respectable journals. I've no doubt Ben Goldacre of the Guardian's Bad Science would have a field day! It is ... Read More:

The relationship between mind and body, and the tremendous difficulty of explaining that relationship, has been a central theme in modern philosophy since Descartes' famous 'cogito ergo sum'. In the subsequent centuries the entire heavy artillary of analytical philosophy has been brought to bear, categorical mistakes have been claimed, behavourist theories championed, yet the awkard I stubbornly remains, peering out at the world. A bundle of neurons and synapses themselves composed of randomly spinning ... Read More:

I have recently been introduced to the area of behavioral finance and I should admit that I have been thoroughly impressed so far by whatever I have read.

The authors talk about how we need to make our choices in everyday life based on positives. Though it might sound obvious, several times we make choices by process of elimination. We arrive at our preferred choice by eliminating weak choices by focusing on negatives. The authors then explain that how a change in the approach to focus more on the positives changes ... I just received this a couple of days ago and am finding it highly useful; I am currently in the first year of my Psychology degree and this book explains many areas I am covering with such clarity that I feel this is a must read for all Psychology undergraduates. Encompassing a wide range of topics, from Language to Gender, 'Simply Psychology' provides a brief yet informative introduction to ideas from various approaches such as Biological, Cognitive, Developmental etc. to help us understand the basics of Psychology. Written in a basic format, ... Read More:

This book was recommended reading on my course. It was suggested along with a number of other personality books, but is far the better book. The number of topics covered by this book outnumber the other texts, and the level of detail is much greater. I agree with the other reviewer that this text gives the students loads of essay material.

The book covers all the major personality theories, and provides a good critique of each one. The book also covers all the intelligence areas needed. Finally the book covers some more 'current' areas ... Read More:

The book is well researched with an excellent reference section, and has some great insights into human behaviour and communication on both an individual and social level.Malcolm Gladwell tells us that when something major happens it's usually because its been building for a while and that it just needs the addition of a magic 'something' to shift the balance in order for the phenomena to take place. It contains some excellent examples of this `tipping point' being reached, such as the huge drop in serious crimes in New York in the mid 1990s.

Until this book, there was not an accessible source to which the coaching psychologist with an interest in applying positive psychology in their coaching practice can readily turn. And what might coaching psychologists be looking for in a book that purports to do this? An understanding of the scientific backbone of positive psychology? Ready applications to coaching psychology practice? Top tips and recommendations for applying positive psychology in the coaching psychology engagement to leverage strengths, enhance well-being, and drive performance? Or all ... Read More:

This is an indispensible book full of natural wisdom that opens up a whole world of thought. You will go back to read some passages again and again. The first 150 hundred pages are pretty hard work, but the pay off comes big time so stick with it.
