This is an excellent book to make you realise how your feelings are determined by your thoughts, and how you can positively influence your mood by changing the way you think. Some self-help books don't deliver because they're too vague but this book is also very practical, with many useful exercises. It's no wonder that many people are so enthusiastic about CBT and talking about it as an alternative to medication. I do not suffer from depression and was always a fairly happy person but this book ... Read More:

This is a great book, nice print and easy to read. I was desperate to help my son who gets angry and frustrated quite alot. He is autistic and has speech and language problems and it was distressing to see him so angry. This book has helped alot.

As an A Level psychology student using both the AS and A2 versions, i feel that i am eligible to comment.
There are so many other text books out there that would better equip studets with the knowledge needed to pass exams. Fair enough, the descriptions of subtopics are thorough. However, the commentary (evaluation) boxes, rather pretentiously, go all around the houses, and do not explain evaluative points concisively.
The layout of the book is poor, and the use of a KEY to have to work out which ... Read More:

This book was recommended reading on my course. It was suggested along with a number of other personality books, but is far the better book. The number of topics covered by this book outnumber the other texts, and the level of detail is much greater. I agree with the other reviewer that this text gives the students loads of essay material.

The book covers all the major personality theories, and provides a good critique of each one. The book also covers all the intelligence areas needed. Finally the book covers some more 'current' ... Read More:

First I'd like to say this is a very hard books to read. Huxley is talking about a subject which is outside of our own perception; he does it with great eloquence and clarity but it may seem impenetrable for some, and certainly is no easy read, even at 100 pages.

It's eye opening, and gave me a whole new perception on religion, art, history, etc. Ultimately, it explains that visionary experience (the kind that mescalin induces), is a naturally occuring mechanism when the body is under stress that has disappeared. Read it, believe it and take ... Read More:

I read about Erickson as the pioneer of NLP, and his work in hypnosis and psychotherapy and was intrigued. This book is a great introduction to Erickson. His style of communication which involves the use of skilfully vague language patterns, rapport skills, and conversational hypnosis techniques, forms the basis of the Milton Model in NLP.

These stories are case studies, people with all sorts of problems, and very interesting solutions, and great stories.

This guy is a genius. From bedwetting to alcoholism, to repression, I was particularly ... Read More:

While I see little point in reviewing the book itself, it being undoubtably one of the pillars of both 20th century thought and culture, a seismic shock which decimated the academic psychology of its time and sent ripples through every sector of society, touching each and every one of us whether we requested it or not; modern advertising, essentially being initiated by Freud's nephew, being a case in point here.

However the reason I write this review is simply to warn the buyer that this edition is HIGHLY abridged; Wordsworth have cut the book down from ... Read More:

Contrary to what the negative review of this book says, 'Learned Optimism' is based on decades of psychological research. Dr Seligman identifies the explanatory styles by which we make sense of the world. It shows two distinct patterns that pessimists adopt when explaining good events in their lives, and how these styles reverse to explain negative events. For instance, pessimists tend to write off good events as 'just luck' whereas they take 'the blame' for bad things. Optimists tend to do the opposite. Dr Seligman's research is grounded in the cognitive approach pioneered ... Read More:
