This book is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which basically sets out to help you become aware of where you are thinking unrealistically (or just plain wrongly), and to replace these thoughts with helpful and more realistic ones.

I was really scared for a fair while that this book wouldn't help me, but actually it has, and loads. By about half-way through, I was daring to believe people actually loved me, I was approaching groups of people and joining in with the conversation, ... Read More:

Where do I start ? For many years I have been in an extremely abusive marriage, been very unhappy and being constantly told to just leave him, you deserve better. How I wish I had this book 15 years ago - I have come to understand and realise my husbands motives - creating so much confusion, allientating me from family and friends ... the list is endless. It made me cry and start break down the walls I had around my heart and numbed feelings - it was like reading my own life story. I am still in the abusive ... Read More:

When I finished this book ( with great difficulty ) I asked myself the question. Has this book one original idea ?, I came to the conclusion the answer was no.It's guilty of false advertising, it won't change your mind or life.

Despite claims to the contrary, the books message boils down to one simple point. "Positive things happen to positive people". Seligman realises nobody in their right mind would buy this obvious bit of homespun wisdom. So he dresses it up by trying to add some academic spit and polish. It's ... Read More:

I recently bought this book hoping to learn how to read and better understand the behavior of the business people and situations I come across daily in my work in finance. My hopes for this knowledge were SURPASSED as the guidance Mr. Navarro provides in this book is so practical and constructive you can start applying it immediately. I like his style of writing too - easy to follow, engaging with many real examples. I also found the pictures used throughout the book are very helpful in making a behavior memorable so I can look out for ... Read More:

Further chapters present a step-by-step 'how to' guide to the treatment of a variety of anxiety disorders including panic attacks, OCD, social anxiety and generalised anxiety. ... Read More:

This is a brilliantly thought-out and therefore hugely helpful book for all those working on their own pschological and spiritual growth, and for those seeking to help others in it.
Types are superbly described; analysis is in-depth and clear; inferences and follow-on material well laid-out.
This book has surely changed many thousands of people's lives; it will go on doing so for many years yet!

I have been interested in MBTI for some time but this book really brought it to life in a practical way. I now use it regularly when I am to go into a potentially difficult business (or even social) meeting, especially if it with someone with whom I do not normally get on well. It has helped me resolved so many tricky situations and enabled me to achieve good out comes from business and sales relationships which looked difficult.
A spledid book and highly recommended.

This is aimed at therapists wanting to run a skills training group for people with BPD using a model called Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). It's thorough and helpful considering all aspects of running such a group programme. The book also includes exercises for group members.

IT IS NOT a self-help book and not particularly helpful for therapists working in 1:1 therapy.

The bad stuff
Martha certainly makes the point about 1 in 25, or 4% of the population are without conscience a few times. Over egging the pudding with it at the beginning of the book.
A touch subjective in certain areas, and some of the statements made could have done with more backup.
Other reviewers are right, in that Robert O'Hare's book covers the subject matter in certain areas much better.
I suppose all of us at some time have operated with a minimised conscience on a past occasion or 2. I had a few pangs of guilt on reading ... Read More:
