No Time For Goodbye

The opening chapters get off to a great start, sadly followed by too much character explanation of emotions that have no real depth and frankly become less believable as time goes on, inevidably half way through not only do you know how it's all going to end, you can't help but feel you are immersed in a screenplay for a TV movie. As crime thillers go... this is pretty disappointing.

Inevitably over-rated after all that has been said and written about it, and about Alan Moore, this remains a necessary touchstone for anyone interested in the overlap between traditional fiction and graphic novels (ok, comics). Not quite as compelling as From Hell in its attempt at the serious, this is richly peopled and paints an alternate world as convincing as any, and occassionally more convincing that the one we're actually stuck with. If you're interested in where and why the imperfect, even ... Read More:

I really wanted to like this after all the hype but to be honest I found it a bit boring and melodramatic. The central idea was good but I never really got inside Lewis's head and towards the end the fact that every female character in the book found him irresistible got a bit silly. The final scenes in the church and at the railway station beggared my belief, you could see the book was written with a movie deal in mind. I found myself skipping large chunks and was a bit bored.

Just a short review as there are so many already - BUT .... I was a bit disappointed by The Kite Runner, not least because I read A Thousand Splendid Suns first and expected this book to be as good - it wasn't.

Another reviewer said of The Kite Runner 'It's an adequate story, filled with parts that are designed to make the reader cry.' I agree with this. I did find it a little predictable and it lacked something which A Thousand Splendid Suns had (which I can't quite put my finger on) but that's not to ... Read More:

I have to agree with some of the other reviews in that this book isn't brilliant by ANY stretch of the imagination but neither do I think it is rubbish. I have to say I found the end a bit frustrating - some of the descriptions of things were getting tedious and the plot with Guy Glover was really unnecessary. I felt his character was pointless and the book would have been much better had the author focussed more on Tor & Rose. It is as though the author had run out of steam at the end and just wanted to get it ... Read More:

An enjoyable read but follows a very similar pattern to the first book which makes it far too predictable and slightly repetitive. Having said that, I think the relationship between Bella and Jacob was far superior than Edward and Bella - how many people will shoot me down for that? :). I think this is because it's much more natural, the latter's relationship always seemed a bit superficial, what with Bella always being dazed by Edward's beauty. Then again, perhaps Jacob is too good for the likes of Bella. Her constant references ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite books. I found it great company. I loved it from start to finish and couldn't put it down. Markus Zusak creates beautiful characters (e.g. Liesel, Rudy, Hans Huberman etc. ) that you just fall in love with. My only slight grievance was that I would've liked to learn more about Liesel as an adult. But maybe this was because I didn't want the book to end! Overall though its a fantasic read. Highly recommended.

The book sets a story built around the lives of two women; Laila and Mariam and their lives amidst the war torn Afghanistan. At first I thought the war side of the story may act as a deterrent for a long drawn out novel but it provides an interesting an easily readable backdrop to what eventually turns into a novel of love between Laila and Tariq (her one legged childhood friend, Mariam the other wife to their shared husband Rasheed and Afghanistan.

The text starts with the life of Mariam who we find is an illegitimate child with a sad ... Read More:

There is much merit in anything self-helpy.
If you have taken the time to pick up a book like "The Secret" at least you are taking positive steps to improve your life.
This alone marks you out as part of a tiny minority of people who are more likely than the crowd to achieve their dreams.
The Secret is moderately useful in reminding you to use positive thinking but there are much better books out there for same.
That said, one thing this whole movement gets TOTALLY wrong, however, is the notion that "the universe" is limitlessly abundant ... Read More:

This book exists of three interwoven strands: a recounting of a murder, a social history of the period that the murder occured, and discussions of contemporary crime fiction.

The first strand worked fine, and I appreciate the necessity of the second, but the detours into the contemporary crime fiction completely ruined the rhythm of the book for me. Where I had been hooked, I found my mind wandering, hoping the book would get back on track in as short a time as possible.

The prose was also, at times, rather too flowery for my liking.
