| I read this book hoping it would be just as the title described it "a cheerful book about depression".
Personally, I didnt find it that cheerful and it read like one long poetic metaphor. As an autobiography into a depressed poets life, I found it very interesting and some of the symptoms described I could defintily relate to. | What a lovely book. I enjoyed this thoroughly and read it slowly, over about a month. I'm left with wonderful images and a feeling that the world has been enlarged for me. Although I also really liked Paradoxes and Faxes, this book feels as if her touch has become more certain, so that she is more confident of getting it right with tricky areas - and she certainly doesn't shun those. I think the opening sequence is wonderful - she richly conveys pain, sorrow and anxiety - and the everyday - in a brilliantly understated way. Later poems ... Read More: |
