Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Stunning
'Intelligent' music gets on my nerves. You know what I'm talking about - egotistical music that the broadsheets rave on about, yet never shift any copies.

Elbow have come in to that 'intelligent' category. But suprise! This music is smart, but brilliant! Don't worry, there's no egotistical style Radiohead nonsense going on here, or any Thom Yorke style mindless wailing. Guy Garvey is a billion times the singer of Thom Yorke (then again, isn't everyong with a voice?), but the fact that he can exert so much emotions in to a song is incredible. His voice is so soulful, and the music is so mature as well. Strings, horns, guitars - it's all here.

This album deservedly put Elbow in to the mainstream, and it is the first deserving winner of the Mercury Music Award since Franz Ferdinand back in 2004. Let's hope they make more.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - I gave them the elbow...............
I know, I know! This makes attractive listening for a certain audience and I guess it packs some intelligence by comparison to so much of the nonsense that falls upon our ears while we go about our lives. But this album just doesn't do it for me. I guess I've seen too many summers.

There's nothing here that I actively dislike; it just doesn't pack enough integrity or sparkle to deserve a place in my collection.

'Grounds for Divorce' and 'One Day Like This' have been well played on R2 in the UK and they make excellent airplay. I can appreciate them in that context ........ but I'm never going to sit on my sofa and endure the whole album; I just can't envisage an occasion when it would meet my mood, alter my mood, or hold my attention. Instead of becoming absorbed by Elbow I would be reminded several times while listening that it's high time I gave some of my other stuff an airing. .....Peter Gabriel, Mike and the Mechanics, Barenaked Ladies, Baghdadies, Talk Talk, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Rickie Lee Jones, Wasis Diop ....... these, and likely several others, would come to mind.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Albums are seldom THIS good...
Let me get one thing straight - there is no hype surrounding this album, every word of praise lavished on this album has been justified and, in 'The Seldom Seen Kid', Elbow haven't just made one of the best albums of 2008, they have made one of the best albums of all time. It isn't often that the grandeur and beauty of the music is equally matched by the poetry and prose of the lyrics, but on this album it is almost a battle between the lyrics and music to see which excels most. Winning the Mercury Music Prize for this album was a great moment for Elbow and, as far as I am concerned, it was a worthy winner, although it has caused me just a little bemusement as their last album, 'Leaders Of The Free World' was pretty much just as exceptional as this one.

In a way, winning the Mercury Music Prize is a double edged sword, because it will bring listeners to this album who wouldn't naturally wander in this direction. Some will be absolutely beguiled by the album, some won't really get what the fuss is all about. Quite honestly, if you approach 'The Seldom Seen Kid' with a superficial pop mentality then you're likely to be disappointed. If you approach this album thinking that you can press play, listen to it once, and then expect to get all it has to offer, then you're likely to be disappointed. Indeed, if you're easily bored by slower, more expressive music, then this album isn't likely to be your cup of tea. I don't honestly know how many times I have listened to this album - my only estimate is "lots" - but, like any truly great release, I appreciate it more and more each time I listen to it.

You just can't pick favourites from 'The Seldom Seen Kid' - well I can't, anyway. The vast majority of the compositions are just brilliant. How can I put the powerful, heartbreaking strings of 'A Day Like This' above the latin-influenced passion of 'The Bones Of You'? How could I possibly put the tremendously catchy, bluesy, 'Grounds For Divorce' above the sheer magnificence of 'The Loneliness Of The A Tower Crane Driver'? I could go on until all of the titles are exhausted, but I won't. It isn't a case of having something for everybody here, it is a case of having everything for somebody, all glued together by Guy Garvey's gorgeous voice. This is a piece of art which speaks to me on so many emotional and intellectual levels. This is an album which towers over all of its contemporaries in terms of ambition, execution and quality - nothing else this year has really come close. The word is often overused, but this IS a masterpiece.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Very disapointed
bought this album on the streangth of hearing the single ( last track on album ) and I have to say how disapointed I was with the reat of the album, only buy this cd if your a fan of the group themselves

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My faith firmly restored in the British public - give yourself a pat on the back
Both the huge support/acclaim for this album and the John Sergeant affair are proof that we should never underestimate our enduring ability to occasionally do the right thing. Elbow are a great band. Never fashionable, no gimmicks, not much fuss but always able to create great music. All their albums are streeta aheads of the wretched Keane, Snow Patrol and Razorlight. Here they move into overdrive. Some of the most wonderful songs ever recorded by a British band are contained on this CD. Weather to Fly had me weeping like a professional onion peeler; Mirroball is very powerful & romantic with superb lyrics

"We took the town to town last night.
We kissed like we invented it!
And now I know what every step is for:
To lead me to your door".

Then you have On days like this, Grounds for Divorce and the lovely "Friends of ours" which is a superb closer. I was so chuffed when they won the Mercury award. Their delight and response was a joy. None of this "we are great artists and to good for awards" or "too hip to pretend that we really do care". Its been a long road for them to travel and Guy Garvey's reaction was genuine and honest just like their music.

A plea. Buy it for Christmas for every member of your family, give it to your friends, play it to the cat, send multiple copies to that idiot Simon Cowell and make him have Elbow night on the X Factor. Better still take that rubbish of the TV for a week and give the stage to Elbow. Make it the Christmas No 1 album, give a knighthood to each band member......I'm going for a lie down now
