Rating: - DREADFUL!!
I suppose after all the hype I should have expected it. Wooden and totally unbelievable... Keira desperately trying to be as good as Nicole Kidman (who also kept saying "come back to me") in Cold Mountain, but Keira is not such a good actress and the film did not have the redeeming features of Rene Zelweger or Jude Law. During the scene where Keira jumped into the fountain, which was quite early in the film, I couldnt help wishing she had stayed there. Sorry my first review and moved to it by watching an ill-conceived, self-indulgent and over-hyped waste of time. I do own the book but have not read it yet... perhaps I had best not bother.

Very well made but typically depressing war time period drama set around the central and unlikely conceit that a good work of fiction heals better than honesty.

Rating: - Should have stuck to the book
Can't understand why they didn't stick to the book after the intial 1935 part of the film. The final parts of the film are significantly different to the book especially the ending which has nothing to do with the TV interview nonsense used in the film. A good film but could have been infinitely better if it had stuck to the book.

Rating: - A good period film
I'm not the biggest fan of Keira Knightly but I really enjoyed her performance in this film and paired with McAvoy she shines.
It is well shot, it holds your attention throughout the unfolding story of two lovers.
A great film, but the ending was perhaps a little abrupt for my taste.
Any Keira Knightly fan will love this and I recommend it to anyone who likes other period pieces such as Pride and Prejudice.

Rating: - read the book
if you want to get the best from atonement, please read the book first.the book was one of the best works of fiction i have read.the film version is not one of the best films i have seen.it is not a bad film,but it does not do justice to the book. someone wrote that nothing happened for great quantities of the film and they are right. two thirds of the book deal with the build up to the crime and i am afraid this doesnt make for good viewing and in my view the build up to the arrest in the film was a bit rushed.i dont think the acting was particularly good. kiera knightley is not a good actress.it is beyond me why she is in continuous employment.
