- Not a great book, but it is a GREAT programme3 stars for the book, 6 stars for the "7lbs in 7 Days" programme. This book is not a particularly great book. Jason Vale's style can get irritating, and theres a lot of repetition and wasted space (e.g. the pages where you're supposed to keep a diary of your experiences during the week). However, all its designed to do is get you through the "7lbs in 7 Days" programme, which it does very well. The real question is whether the "7lbs in 7 Days" programme does what its supposed to do i.e. achieve weight loss, energy gain, and kick-start a healthier lifestyle. My experience is that it does - I did this programme and lost 8lbs during the week; I have much more energy now and I'm doing more exercise than I have for years. The book doesn't tell you anything you didn't already know (e.g. take some exercise, give up smoking and stop eating junk food. Well duh!!). Nor does it tell you much about nutrition. What it does do is get you in the right frame of mind for doing the 7 day programme, then lead you through doing it. Reading the book is pretty pointless if you're not going to do the programme (although of course you have to in order to make that decision?!?). If you're looking for in depth nutritional information, look elsewhere. The one thing that really annoyed me was failure to specify the number of apples required in each recipe. The shopping list says to get 39 apples, the recipes just say "apples". For anyone having this problem, the answer is "2 apples" in all cases except the 'Passion 4 Juice Master', which only uses "1 apple" (I discovered this after finding an article about the book on the Daily Mail web site; if you can't be bothered with the book this article includes all the recipes from the book plus a 7 day recipe planner!). Also, I only discovered what a 'Wheatgrass Chaser' was after reading the Daily Mail article (you mix the wheatgrass with your juice). Having only experienced the type of chaser you have in the pub I'd been drinking the juice, then drinking the wheatgrass by itself afterwards (which is absolutely repulsive - don't do it!). If you're going to do the programme, here are my thoughts/advice: 1. Give yourself a break. This is not going to be easy to fit around a busy job (although its certainly not impossible). If at all possible do it when you've got a week off work (thats what I did). 2. Yes, its going to cost you money. You DO need a juicer AND a blender. You DO have to buy a whole bunch of fruit, veg and supplements. You DON'T need anything else. The book suggests that the DVD/CD/Chart etc. may make it easier mentally, but you DON'T have to have them (I didn't bother). As it happens I only ended up having about 3/4 of the juices (I just wasn't hungry), thus saving a bit of cash. 3. Get a decent juicer. The books buying advice is pretty thin on the ground, basically recommending the Phillips juicer and not saying much else. However, I did buy the Phillips machine and it is very good. Annoyingly, the machine came with another (free) copy of this book!! 4. The supplements are really really easy to get hold of; use the Internet. You can get them all from the Juice Masters web site, but if you don't like that there are loads of other sites selling this stuff. 5. Don't underestimate the washing up. Its a nightmare. I ended up making batches of 3 or 4 juices at a time to avoid having to wash it all up again and again... 6. The juices do take a bit of getting used to; I felt really sick on the first day, and had to spend quite some time on the loo. However, as the book points out, this is not uncommon on the first day. Strangely enough, I didn't have a problem with 'JM's Pure Green Super Juice', which the book implies is utterly disgusting... And finally, the whole thing was almost worth it just for the simple childish excitement I felt about having an avocado salad and using my teeth again on day 8!!! Rating: - Brilliant Book!I bought this book 3 weeks ago and I followed the plan religiously and lost 9 lbs and lost most of the distressing health problems I was suffering.!! I cannot believe how easy it is to follow and would recommend this to anybody who has some patience. I work and also look after a young child and I coped but you do have to be organised or else it can all fall apart. I am now on the follow up book - Turbo cahrge your life in 14 days, and I am still losing weight and feeling fantastic. Do your body a favour and do this book. Rating: - PURE VALUE FOR MONEY I am amazed at some of the reviews I have just read. I have read 7lbs in 7days and found it to be one of the most motivating and informative books I have ever read. I did the programme, lost 10lbs and have lost a further 12lbs since! Despite what the two reviewers in question wrote, the diet can be done without buying the DVD, CD or even supplements, as is clearly explains in the book. The author even explains people should get his other book from a libary. The supplements can be purchsed at places like Holland and Barrett and I don't think the author has a 'deal' with them. The suggestion that the author is up-selling and not writing from the heart is clearly untrue. Some people will always criticise no matter what. However, after reading the unjust comments I felt the need to write a review. It would be a crying shame to miss the opportunity of reading this great book, doing the diet and reaping the rewards simply due to a couple of reviewers who clearly missed the whole point of the book. Don't take my word for it, the book is incredibly cheap, so get, read it and make up your own mind. Thank you Jason for writing the book and thank you sincerely for changing my life Rating: - This book could have been 20 pages longThe premise is fine but the book was tedious in the extreme. He rants trying to do the motivational bit and it just sounds like a preachy self help book. Yes OK we know Juice is good for you but do we need 120 pages of it before we actually get to any recipes. Repeating the same mantra every 5 pages. Then you need to buy a juicer, OK , then possibly a wheat grass juicer, then some of the ingredients are simply impossible to find unless you live in a major city. Spirulina I mean where the heck do I get that in Luxembourg. All the added extras are optional, like the DVD, the CD. the wall Chart, the supplements. I mean give the guy credit he's on to a money spinner here. Plus it looks like he's written several other books on the same subject. Hey lets re-package the same book. Still he clearly believes in what he talks about but really what a pain to organise and it would cost a fortune. Saying that I may try and do the diet if I can find a juice. I will have to find some kind of health shop then really invest some time and cash in buying all this lot. Then of course I will need to flasks to store the juice in as it has to be kept fresh so I can sip them slowly all day. I think this is a great diet if you have no job and plenty of time. Of course the thrust of it is the exercise, 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes early evening. I don't think anyone needs a book to tell you if you exercise twice a day cut out tea, coffee and booze you will lose weight. So this is a state the bleednig obvious book for those that need it told to them this way. Rating: - A sales pitch for other productsThis book has been extremely disappointing for a few reasons: 1) Mr Vale feels the need to denigrate established opinions of doctors and dieticians in order to promote his own ethos - this negativity is quite a turn-off. 2) Mr Vales uses many 'silly' analogies e.g. if David Blaine can survive 35 days on water, you can handle 7 days on juices - this is hardly a sensible analogy for someone who is supposed to be espousing healthy living. 3) Mr Vale has an irritating, americanised evangelical tone which is quite off-putting, not to mention patronising. 4) Most significantly, two thirds or so of the way through the book, Mr. Vale starts plugging his other books, a DVD, a CD, a wallchart etc. - saying that purchasing all of these will give you a much better chance of succeeding - either the book is a stand-alone, self-contained item or it is not - this is the worst kind of selling and leaves you feeling cheated. |
