Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - A Dangerous Book, Especially If You Have Heart Disease
A half a dozen years ago a friend of mine underwent bypass surgery when he was in his mid-sixties. Shortly after that he stumbled on to the Weston A. Price Foundation, where he met Mary & Sally. They told him what he wanted to hear. His heart disease was all the fault of processed foods. High-fat animal foods are heart healthy! Cholesterol is a nutrient!

Not too long after that he took up running, and I first met him at a pub run. I had also become quite interested in nutrition, especially after reading John Robbins' "The Food Revolution". Needless to say, while we were both in agreement on the dangers of processed foods, we had near polar-opposite views on animal-based foods.

We passed information back and forth for a while, but neither one swayed the other. Finally we just agreed to disagree. About two years ago while running alone on an intown trail in some pretty cold weather, he passed out for a good chunk of time. As it turned out from lack of blood-flow to his brain. A few months later he told the doctor who restored greater blood-flow through his carotid arteries that he now intended to adopt a plant-based diet. He was quite surprised by his doctor's response. "If it were me, that's what I'd do". He later told me, "So they know!"

About two or three years ago, I witnessed a close relative of mine drink a glass of his wife's breast milk, in front of his father-in-law. I think his father-in-law found it a bit disturbing, and I, probably like a lot of people, would remember it.

Yet we live in a culture where every day grown adults drink the "breast milk" of another species, and consider it perfectly normal. Growth hormones, antibiotics, dioxin and other environmental contaminates aside, cows milk is a chemical solution designed to stimulate the immune system and the growth of a young cow, or calf. Cows milk is for cows! YOUNG COWS!

If you're going to eat beef, I'm sure grass-fed is better than grain-fed, but I'd choose elk or buffalo over beef, and probably visit a local market to find the cleanest source for any meat. ( I gave the book a second star because it does sound the alarm on processed foods.)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great addition to any household
This book has -a lot- of information to digest about the foods we eat today and the things we should and shouldn't have in our diets. Some of the information startling (especially if this is your first venture into the area of proper nutrition), some of it is just plain common-sense. Although dry at times, the book is a really good read and I highly recommend it. I had a lot of health problems growing up and I am still struggling with a few, but after making some changes in my diet on my own and further changes based on the recommendations in the book, I have found my health to be greatly improved over what it was. Most people I talk to go on and on about how they could never give up certain foods (be it junk food as we know it, or "junk" food as stated in this book) and, before being in a situation where I didn't have access to these items (in fact, couldn't get access to them), I probably would have agreed with them. However, I found that once I necessarily went through a couple of weeks without refined sugar, without caffeine, without other processed and refined foods, the cravings for them stopped completely and my health started to improve by leaps and bounds. While spouting the importance of animal fats and other animal products in the human diet, this book would prove equally useful to strict vegetarians for the equal emphasis put on grains, the proper way to prepare them and the importance of fermented foods. It is much more than a "cookbook" and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in healthy living.

That said, I can't help my skeptical nature and my love of learning on my own and could not take all Fallon says at face value. While much of it is very true, I find that some of the statements made are "too far on the opposite side of the spectrum." One such comment that I have been doing a lot of personal research on is concerning the nutritive value of Spirulina, something I was introduced to and which "cured" my anemia where other remedies tried did not. It is still a great book and a valuable resource of knowledge, I would just recommend that it not be the end to your research and/or quest to a healthier diet.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Outstanding! A must read for healthy living!
This is not just a cookbook! Equally or even more important is the first section of the book which contains invaluable chapters on fats (importance of butter and coconut oil as well as polyunsaturates), grains (their proper preparation!!!), proteins (raw meats and fish as well), vitamins, minerals (excellent documentation on how we absorb minerals and explains mineral salts, chelates, colloids etc.), special diets, etc. This is well researched and quotes and explains the faults in studies used by the 'establishment' and diet dictocrats to 'justify' their positions. Throughout the cookbook section the margins are filled with invaluable quotes from varying sources. Just excellent! After 20 years of researching and reading on nutrition, I finally found a book that puts it all in perspective. You need this book!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Open up, try it and you will not regret it
This is one great book that anybody interested in health and nutrition should own. Although the book centers around the benefits of animal food in our diet (like butter, chicken &beef stocks, organ meat etc), I actually believe it is an especially useful book for vegetarians. After reading this book, they might still deny that animal food has been a natural part of human's diet throughout the whole history and they might still go on to believe that animal food is bad for health. However, if they just pick out from this book the methods for cooking the grains, using the right vegetable oils( eg coconut, olive oil), or adding enzyme rich fermented foods into their diet, soon they will feel grateful to S. Fallon and M.G. Enig.
I have been applying this book's principles for two months now, and I can surely say there is a big good change in my family's health already. Read this book carefully and give it a try for at least one month.I promise you will never regret it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My favorite cookbook (and I have many)
I absolutely love this book. I have to be careful not to spend too much time reading it, there's so much information on every page. Most of the recipes I've tried have turned out very well as long as I follow them well. My kids love the baking I do with it.

Also, I have switched to raw milk, as my children are big milk addicts. Their health has improved because of it, and they never fail to get sick when the raw milk is unavailable. If you get your milk from a reputable source, there is no need to worry about contamination. You can get salmonella from pasteurized milk as well. The taste is much better, and my husband can drink it without his stomach being bothered. This subject is well worth further study if you are skeptical.

Anyway, as far as the time involved, mostly you have to plan ahead. Soaking your grains does not require extra work so much as extra time. It demands a new way of life, which for me has been more of a gradual process of adding one new thing at a time instead of becoming overwhelmed with trying to change everything at once. Add what works for you and live a better life even if it's not perfect. I can't tell you how much better real food tastes and how much better you feel when you cut out processes and refined foods. this is "health" food that pleases the pickiest of eaters and never looks scary!
