- Excellent Management of the Emotional Part of DietingThe concept behind "Intuitive eating" is both simple and effective especially if you don't suffer from compulsive behavior, which is difficult to overcome without a support group. I think that this is a detailed and valuable lifestyle program or more like guidelines for paying less attention to food and down playing its importance in your life. This IS important for successful weight loss. I have to say that the emotional side of the process is very important, although there is also physical/biochemical side, which is not thoroughly covered. That's why I think that you should pair it with "your scientific diet" for 100% superior coverage of the broad spectrum of issues and challenges that lay ahead of each person who wants to lose weight quickly and easily. Intuitive Eating focuses on how to eat and heal from within instead of blacklisting and whitelisting many foods. The two authors are very knowledgeable and I am confident that this is one of the must have books for everyone facing weight issues. Rating: - Good book when supported with additional informationI have seen so many books on dieting! Each month or so a new title pops up claiming to have the ULTIMATE SOLUTION to our nation's overeating problem. That's right folks, in most cases this is just that - OVEREATING. In most cases we do not need any diet; all we need is to stop overeating - the constant snaking, and chewing usually accompanied with drinking pops. How about drinking just clear mineral water instead? Just by making this simple adjustment many of us would shed a considerable amount of pounds. As the authors of Intuitive Eating rightly point out, there is no ultimate diet that fits everyone. Each one of us is unique, we grow up in different environments, we are all differently "wired" and we have different needs. The problem with Intuitive Eating is that most of the foods that we find in our grocery stores is not natural food any more; it often has so many added ingredients that cheat the wisdom of our bodies. Most of us can probably name one or two snack that we are just not able to stop eating. In my case it is potato chips. Whenever I start eating them, I cannot stop until I eat all of them. Why is that? - I don't know. According to Kevin Trudeau, the author of the book Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About, the food industry purposely adds some ingredients to "hook us up" with their products, to make us addicted to some foods. Whether this is true or not, it is very likely that our wise bodies will not intuitively know when to stop eating modified, unnatural foods. The way I deal with my problem is simple - I just don't buy any potato chips any more. It is only right to follow the well known advice that can be found in any GOON NUTRITION books (do not confuse that with dieting books): - eating in small portions, not overindulging - eating only fresh ingredients, drinking a lot of water - eating a lot of vegetables and fruits - eating slowly, well chewing each byte - eating all kind of foods, not following any fad diets - changing your diet according to the season - exercising The above well known truths can be found in many books (French Women Don't Get Fat; Can We Live 150, Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About, and many others). In addition, in the book Can We Live 150 you will find the following bad habits that lead people to obesity: - The habit of eating fast and not chewing the food well - Frequent snacking or constant chewing - Incorrect combining of food products - Lying down after meals - Sitting lifestyle - Eating while watching TV - Eating while irritated - Eating before bedtime or at night - Eating mostly refined and cooked food products. Intuitive eating is a good idea, but in the modified foods environment it needs to be supported by additional knowledge of proper food combination etc. Books by Tombak, and some other authors will well fill the void. Rating: - Mixed thoughtsI have mixed thoughts about this book. I really liked the concept of respecting your body and dismissing feelings of guilt and making peace with food. It is a book with a very gentle approach, and true enough, I felt better emotionally after reading the book and I stopped binging. I was abused by different partners for several years and taught to feel guilty if I skipped a day of exercise or if I ate too much (by other people's standards.) This book helped me to shed those guilty feelings and regain my self-respect. However, I highly doubt the chances of success if one were to use this approach to lose weight. This book's approach is based on the concept that your body knows when you are hungry and when you are full, and if you honour these instincts, then you will maintain your natural healthy weight. But do all of us have this self-restraint? The authors stress that diets lead to binges which cause more weight gain. But obese people do not start being overweight due to dieting! Most of the North American population are overweight because they eat too much junk and processed food (often without self-restaint!). According to the book, there are no bad foods and you can eat whatever you want whenever you are hungry. But can you trust yourself to make the right nutrition choices and choose all the healthy and low calorie foods? Not me; I kept reaching for the cookie jar! I was at a healthy weight when I started and I ended up gaining weight instead. Rating: - A wonderful book to help you get in tune with your eatingIt is amazing how in the United States we have such an unhealthy relationship with the pleasures of eating. Either we are overstuffing ourselves with unreasonable restaraunt portions, or we are on a strict diet with a long list of "good" and "bad" foods. This wonderful book guides us into returning to our own natural instinct to eat when we are hungry and stop when we feel comfortably full or satiated. It is not about a diet "plan", there are no good foods, or bad .It is about getting in touch with what our bodies are telling us to eat and when. It is about regaining the pleasure and enjoyment of eating without guilt and punishment. It is about letting go of the diet mentality that has overtaken this country. This book has helped me realize the guilt and overindulgence I have experienced from the world of dieting. It is helping me to respect my body and do what's right for me. Rating: - This book is amazingI just got it and I already feel different about how to eat. It's amazing how such a revolutionary concept can be so simple. The books main principles are stop dieting, respect your body, eat only what you really want when you want it and stop when you're full. This book has taught me to get in touch with my hunger again after living a life of diets, distress and food restriction. If you have problems with food, do yourself a favor and buy this book. It's the best $15 you will ever spend. |
